Krita for comics — where Velika is different

Krita is already a strong free painting app. This guide explains when to stay with Krita for comics and animation, and when Velika’s macOS preview is a separate project-centered experiment.

Updated 2026-09-13

Short answer: Krita is the more mature free painting application, with official desktop builds, deep brushes, color management, animation, and Android packages. Velika is not “Krita, but free.” Both are free to paint with. Velika is an early macOS preview that wants a first-class model for pages, characters, and production memory.

Credit Krita first

Krita’s official feature pages document more than 100 bundled brushes, multiple brush engines, stabilizers, assistants, layers, HDR, color management, PSD support, a storyboard editor, 2D animation, Python scripting, and downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is GPL-licensed and community-owned. Any honest comparison has to start there.

Velika also ships a GPL-licensed desktop preview maintained by AREGRID Limited. Branding and hosted services may use different terms. That still does not make Velika more capable today.

Comic and animation friction that is not a dunk on Krita

Community threads about comic lettering, page production, and long animation organization are mixed. Some artists already finish comics in Krita. Others assemble lettering or series structure around the canvas with extra files. Treat those reports as workflow hypotheses, not as proof that Krita “cannot do comics.”

Google Play reviews of the Android build also mention desktop-scale dialogs, unreachable buttons, and tight canvas space on phones. Those comments are qualitative. Velika has not shipped a phone app, so it cannot claim a better mobile interface—only that a future phone UI must be touch-first and tested on real devices.

Velika’s actual difference

The product thesis is project continuity:

  • characters, locations, and visual rules attached to the work
  • pages, storyboards, and revisions as one structure
  • a calm default painting surface
  • the same creative logic later adapted to each screen size, instead of shrinking a desktop chrome onto a phone

Most of that structure is still being built. The preview you can download is the free local canvas on macOS.

When to stay with Krita

  • you need Windows or Linux today
  • you want a highly customizable, scriptable painting environment
  • you already have a Krita comic or animation pipeline that works
  • you need the Android package, even with its current interface tradeoffs

When to try Velika beside Krita

  • you work on a Mac and want a quieter preview
  • you care about an explicit series/project model more than docker-by-docker customization
  • you want to file bugs against a product that is still early enough to change defaults

Do not migrate a deadline project. Keep Krita as the production tool until Velika releases prove the workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Why build another free painting app?

Krita is a benchmark, not a problem to erase. Velika is testing a different default: project memory for sequential work, plus a future touch-first interface requirement.

Is Velika open source?

The current desktop preview is described as GPL-licensed. Always read the license file in the build you download.

Is Velika more powerful than Krita today?

No. Krita is substantially more mature and available on more platforms.

Can Velika open Krita or PSD files?

Layered interchange is a design goal. Verify with copies of real files before any production move.
